Abstract

Purpose: This study was done to investigate the relationship among anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, and self-esteem on society adjustment in North Korean refugees.

Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used in this study. The subjects were 105 North Korean refugees living in G-city metropolitan area, Korea. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients.

Results: The score of social adjustment showed significantly positive correlations with the score of self-esteem (r=.30, p=.002) and significantly negative correlations with the score of depression (r=-.28, p=.004) and post traumatic stress (r=-.28, p=.004).

Conclusion: This study showed that social adjustment significantly correlated with depression, self-esteem, and post traumatic stress among North Korean refugees. These findings suggest a need to develop a nursing intervention strategy to enhance self-esteem and social adjustment in order to decrease anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress in North Korean refugees.
